Welcome to Huginn

Most of you will no doubt recognize me better as Marc Scaurus in Eve Online – blogger at Malefactor, TacticalEntertainment.tv’s Eve bureau, off and on podcaster (Ransoms and Roams as well as Voices from the Void), owner/operator of Evebloggers.com and current manager of the Eve Blog Pack. You know, writing things in that format kind of makes it sound like I do tons of work! However, I’m never afraid of a new challenge, be it taking the plunge into Piracy or Goonswarm in Eve Online, or tackling new, strange adventures in other games.

This blog is a reflection of that compulsion to seek out new challenges. While I plan on maintaining a healthy blogging pace at both Malefactor and TEN when it comes to Eve Online (a game that, I am resigned to saying, I will probably play until they shut down the servers), I’ve decided to speak out when it comes to the slew of other games that I have played, still play, and look forward to playing in the future. A quick gaming history seems to be in order at this point:

I was not born a gamer. Growing up in the late 80s/early 90s, this may seem strange. It seems that this time period was when many a gamer’s foundations were laid, on such systems as the Commodore 64, Atari, and the original Nintendo. This was not the case for me. I was poor – or, I should say, my family was poor. Growing up, the closest I ever got a Nintendo was when I visited my cousins. It wasn’t until around 1996 that I even got a Super Nintendo, long after its launch.

Gaming didn’t really start making inroads into my soul until I was out of my house and on my own, living the high life as a young Airman in the US Air Force. I bought a PS2 (my second gaming system – yes, I went from an old ass SNES to a PS2) in 2003 – used, from a dude down the hall whose name I can’t remember anymore – and it’s all gone downhill from there.

To list the amount of games I have played to some extent would be long and boring. I have a horrendous habit of not actually finishing games – to this day I think I’ve only beaten maybe a dozen. This is never caused by the same thing – sometimes the gameplay just becomes too repetitive (Assassin’s Creed, I’m looking at you), sometimes something just doesn’t sit right with me (Mass Effect 3 – no I don’t hate the idea of the ending, the game just doesn’t feel right), and sometimes I just find out that I don’t like the game (pretty much every Uncharted).

The upside of this is that my compulsion to not finish games allows me to play even more games! And thus, this blog is born. I’ve played nearly every MMO out there since 2004 (when I first started WoW – yes, you know you played WoW too even if you don’t admit it!), and literally hundreds of console games. I’m not very good at the twitch gameplay, so most of my shooters tend to take place on consoles (there goes a bunch of readers), leaving my PC reserved for PC-exclusive titles. Everything else has been played either on Xbox or Playstation for some time.

Anyways, that’s me. What’s on the horizon (i.e. why should you keep reading?):

A Review on Crusader Kings 2 – literally the best grand strategy game you’ve never played

-Best Mods for CK2 – Paradox has a lively modding community for all their games, but this time they’ve outdone themselves

My Adventures in Tera – I recently got a subscription to Tera, the action based MMO with political intrigue. I hope to explore the world of Tera and see if there’s enough meat to justify staying!

Diablo 3 – Sorry, but D3 is a no-go for me. If I want to mindlessly click ALL THE THINGS I’ll do it in a game that isn’t written by a 6 year old for an in-class assignment. However, I have played it a bit and will give you the lowdown on whether you should too.

UNNAMED SCIFI SHOOTER ON PS3 – Okay, so there’s this NDA that I can’t break, but as soon as it lifts I will have an indepth review and maybe even a guide or two for an upcoming, groundbreaking MMOFPS on the PS3.

General Commentary and Opinions – If you liked the vitriol I spewed from time to time on Voices from the Void, you’ll want to stay tuned here. This time I don’t have to restrict myself to the idiots in Eve – I can attack EVERYONE bwahahaha

Guild Wars 2 – As soon as I can I’ll be preordering GW2 and see if it will, in fact, come to replace Tera in my game lineup

NHL12/13 – This is literally the best sports gaming franchise out there. Just because you don’t understand hockey doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play this – seriously fantastic

And More…. – As time goes on, I’m sure new games will continue coming out, I will continue to not finish them, and hopefully you’ll find some entertainment here all the while.
Welcome to Huginn – it’s gonna be a fun ride!

-H
